Note to myself: Gewurztraminer can make excellent orange wines. The body, alcohol and oily texture of the wines made from this variety are perfectly balanced by the tannins and savory character typical of orange wine making. This one is from Bulgaria, really excellent. It lacks the litchi aroma always associated with Gewurztraminer, but it shows lot of mint, lavender and aromatic herbs. #orangewine #bulgaria #bulgariawine #gewurztraminer

With Burgundian producer Dominique Laurent at a wine tasting in Tokyo. I am not really into taking photos, but Monsieur Laurent was greeting and exchanging words with every single participant of the tasting and I really appreciated it. 26 September 1872: on this day 147 years ago Bettino Ricasoli fixed the Chianti formula, after years of experimentation. His words in the letter to Cesare Studiati read: "I confirmed the results of my first experiences, that is that the wine receives the majority of its perfume from Sangioveto [Sangiovese] (which I greatly admire) and a certain intensity of perception; from Canajuolo [Canaiolo] the amiability which tempers the harshness of the former; the Malvagia [Malvasia], which could be avoided for wines made for ageing, tends to dilute the product of the first two grapes, it enhances the flavor and makes it lighter and readier to use at the daily table." A fruitful seminar and a wild party after that for the Wine Education Week, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) at Caplan Wine Academy (Tokyo). For the occasion I held a short 1 hour seminar about the wines of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore, whose appellation is exactly 50 years old as well. Friuli Venezia Giulia: what a complex wine region for such a (relatively) small number of appellations. Friuli Colli Orientali DOC in particular includes four sub-zones and encompasses three separate DOCGs, all with different requirements. This wine here is a Schioppettino made in the Prepotto subzone, with lots of black fruit character and aromas coming from the ageing (2013 vintage).
